Post House Wines
Our Origin
Established by Hermann Gebers in 1981, our estate is nestled between Somerset West and Stellenbosch, boasting panoramic views of Cape Point, False Bay, and the majestic Helderberg Mountains. Just 7 km from the coast, our farm includes 38 hectares of vineyards that thrive in the cool ocean breezes, producing wines of elegance and character.
Our winemaking journey began in 1996 when Nick Gebers crafted the first vintage after honing his skills in the storied cellars of Burgundy. The name of our winery honors the original homestead—a cherished landmark that once served as the post office for the Raithby missionary community.
Today, we carry forward this legacy, combining family heritage, coastal terroir, and a passion for excellence, in every bottle.
Our Philosopihy
At Post House, our wines are celebrated for their rich colour, depth, and authenticity. We embrace a minimal intervention philosophy, allowing the true character of our terroir to shine through. By planting on lean, less fertile soils, we challenge our vines to produce fruit with intense flavour and natural balance.
We believe great wine is never the result of a single action—but the sum of many thoughtful, deliberate choices made in harmony with the land.
Viticulture & Terroir
Tucked into the foothills of the Helderberg Mountains, Post House vineyards benefit from exceptional natural conditions. Our westerly-facing slopes are perfectly suited for red varietals, while the cooler, south-facing aspects nurture our expressive Chenin Blanc. The vineyards are rooted in gravel-over-clay soils—known locally as cool ground—which retain moisture and slowly release it to the vines, supporting healthy, balanced growth throughout the season.
Just 7 km from False Bay, our vines are gently cooled by coastal breezes that temper the summer heat, preserving natural acidity and freshness in the grapes.
Our plantings span a diverse range of noble and regional varieties: Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinotage, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, and a hint of Viognier—recently joined by exciting newcomers like Mourvèdre, Grenache, and Cabernet Franc.
Post House is renowned for crafting some of the darkest, most intensely coloured red wines in the region—thanks to a rare combination of expressive terroir and traditional winemaking techniques. Production remains intentionally small and artisanal, using wild yeast fermentations, gentle basket pressing, and no fining or filtration.
Every bottle reflects a hands-on, minimal intervention approach—where creativity, care, and nature come together in perfect harmony.
Where Wine Meets the Romance of the Post
At Post House, every bottle tells a story—one steeped in the rich history of letters, stamps, and post boxes. Our name and philosophy are inspired by a bygone era, when communication was thoughtful, deliberate, and cherished. Just like crafting a fine wine, writing and posting a letter requires patience, attention to detail, and a slower pace that honours the process.
Many of our wines pay tribute to this heritage through their names, drawing inspiration from iconic postage stamps. Penny Black—our signature red—gets its name not only from the world’s first self-adhesive stamp but also from the wine’s inky, dark hue. Other uniquely named wines include Merry Widow, Missing Virgin, Golden Monkey, and Treskilling Yellow—each with its own intriguing backstory.
Take the Missing Virgin, for instance: it references a legendary printing error on a Virgin Islands stamp, where the figure of St. Ursula was accidentally left out—a playful nod to the unexpected, much like the distinctive character in each of our wines.
Our label isn’t just a logo; it’s a symbol of craftsmanship, nostalgia, and the art of slowing down—whether you're sealing a letter or uncorking a bottle.
