Bodega Otazu, Pago D.O.P.

"At Otazu, we understand the aesthetics of enjoying a fine wine with the same passion as one appreciates a work of art."

Our Origin

Vine cultivation in the Otazu region dates back to the 12th century, with historical records showing that by the 14th century, figures like King Charles III of Navarre appreciated its wines. Known for their exceptional quality, these wines have a long-standing reputation. The winery was built in 1840 in the style of French châteaux but ceased operations for over a century due to the phylloxera plague.

Winemaking resumed in 1989 to preserve its legacy. Today, the Señorío de Otazu has been restored, serving both as a residence for vineyard workers and as a museum that celebrates the region’s winemaking history, featuring restored tools and contemporary art exhibitions.

THE UNIQUENESS OF TERROIR

Otazu is the northernmost Pago P.D.O. vineyard in
Spain (P.D.O.: Protected Designation of Origin)
. It is located only eight
kilometers from Pamplona and is framed between the Sierra del Perdón and the
Sierra del Sarbil.

In these privileged lands, an exceptional microclimate has
always been found which, together with the unique personality of Otazu’s terroir,
gives the winery’s wines their singular qualities. Given the uniqueness of our
land, we are committed to varieties such as the Cabernet Sauvignon,
Merlot and Chardonnay.
The grapes have been strategically planted
in each of the different soils and areas of the vineyard, with the sole
objective of selecting and achieving the greatest potential of each grape,
expressing the best of its soil.

In Spain, a vino de pago is a wine that comes from a specific vineyard that
has obtained the highest category of recognition due to
the uniqueness of its terroir, considering factors such
as soil, climate and altitude.

Since 2009, Otazu has stood out as one of only 25
wineries in Spain
to have achieved this prestigious recognition. This
allows us to produce wines under our own Protected Designation of Origin, known
as Pago de Otazu PDO.

AT OTAZU, SUSTAINABILITY IS THIS GUIDING PRINCIPLE

The environmental friendliness of our actions defines our
legacy.

At Otazu, environmental sustainability is at the heart of our legacy. We are committed to reducing waste, promoting recycling, and using energy efficiently, all while working with experts and local communities to protect natural ecosystems and native species.

Our estate boasts 18% semi-natural habitats—above the national average—enhancing biodiversity and vineyard resilience. Since 1996, we’ve led the way in Navarra with vegetative cover, improving soil health and controlling vine vigor.

We’ve also reduced the weight of our Ozu by Otazu bottles by 26%, cutting raw material use and CO₂ emissions. These actions, along with our switch to renewable energy, have helped us reduce our carbon footprint by 50% in just three years—demonstrating our deep commitment to a more sustainable future.
